About Fit4Purpose

Engineering experience. Practical data solutions.

Fit4Purpose Solutions is a Calgary-based company connecting industrial operations, measurement and technology. We deliver integration and advisory work, and build TrendOps as part of that capability.

What sets us apart

Operational knowledge and technology knowledge

Fit4Purpose brings both to the table. Operations solutions that work need both.

Operational knowledge

  • Deep industrial process knowledge, learned first-hand
  • HAZOP, design reviews, FAT and commissioning
  • Equipment and instrumentation specification
  • Production measurement and regulatory reporting (AER Directive 017 / 076)

Technology knowledge

  • Cloud data platform architecture
  • Historian-to-cloud integration, analytics and reporting
  • Software development: APIs, edge connectors, applications
  • Automation and applied AI

Data solutions that understand the process

We don’t just move data. We know what it means in the plant, why the regulator cares, and what a good answer looks like.

Value at every level

From the control room to the executive

Control room & field

Reliable data captured at the source.

Operations & engineering

Data connected to assets and process context.

Data & IT

Maintainable integrations across plant and business systems.

Management & reporting

Validated data and traceable reporting workflows.

Executive

A clearer view of performance and priorities.

Our values

How we show up

Our values guide how we approach our work, support each other and build relationships with our customers.

Brilliance

Bring your best thinking. Imagine something new.

Ask questions, share ideas and challenge assumptions. We make room for different perspectives and the courage to try an approach that hasn’t been tried before.

Play

Bring a sense of play to the hardest problems.

Enjoy the puzzle. Explore ideas, build on each other’s thinking and leave room for the unexpected. A little lightness can help us see a possibility we would otherwise miss.

Positivity

See what’s possible, with eyes wide open.

Bring hope, energy and a willingness to find a way forward. We welcome difficult questions and different perspectives—they help us understand the challenge and make progress together.

Courage

Take the first step before the path is clear.

We try the difficult thing, speak up, and keep going when the path is uncertain. That might mean a first attempt, a hard question or a different point of view, even when it feels uncomfortable.

Compassion

Be the support that makes it possible to try.

We seek to understand, support each other, and make room for people to be themselves. When people feel understood, they can speak openly, try something unfamiliar and ask for help.

Connection

Get closer to the people, the problems and the outcomes.

Take time to understand the person and the situation behind the request. Build relationships where people feel heard and valued, and connect the systems and processes that move us forward.

How we work

From possibility to a practical solution

We start with the outcome, explore what could make it possible, and test the approach before building a solution that fits and can grow.

Start with the end in mind

Define what a useful outcome looks like. Then work backwards to understand what would need to change, connect or exist to get there.

Ask what would make it possible

Before ruling something out, ask: “If this were possible, what would it take?” Explore different approaches and question the assumptions that make the problem seem impossible.

Build enough to find out

Create the smallest useful version that lets us test the idea. Use what we learn to refine the approach, try another route or decide whether it is worth taking further.

Build on what you have

Look at the systems, tools, knowledge and processes already available. Find what can be connected, adapted or put to better use, and identify what is missing.

Make it fit for purpose

Deliver a solution that meets the essential need, with clear trade-offs where the full vision isn’t practical. Design it to work with the systems and people around it, with reusable foundations that can scale and adapt as needs change.

Meaning behind the name
The Fit4Purpose icon: three grey bars rising to a taller red bar

The name starts with an acronym: F.I.T. is Friction Is Traction. Friction is where grip comes from, so finding it is the first step to moving forward.

In the logo, the three grey bars are people, process and technology. The fourth bar, in red, is the outcome when all three are aligned: something better than the sum of the parts.

Purpose is the point: helping companies achieve theirs with solutions that are fit for it. And .io is what we do: take inputs and create outputs that drive business and people forward.

Founder & Principal

Rabee Alwan, P.Eng., PMP

Rabee trained in software and has spent more than 20 years in industrial operations, starting in instrumentation, controls and automation on engineering, procurement and construction projects. He learned each process from the inside, applied software thinking to that work throughout, and kept building in technology alongside it.

He then moved to the owner-operator side at Cenovus Energy, where he led production measurement engineering across oil sands assets and developed measurement assurance and daily validation systems. He went on to work with many other owner-operators, helping them solve problems with technology, from historian integration and data governance to cloud platforms and digital solutions. He has seen the work from every angle: designing and building, operating, selling and delivering.

Rabee founded Fit4Purpose in 2017 and began building TrendOps in 2024. He remains directly involved in solution design, customer delivery and product development.

Credentials

  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.), APEGA
  • Project Management Professional (PMP)
  • B.Sc. Computer Engineering, Queen’s University
  • Organizational Change Management Certificate, Mount Royal University

Sometimes a small shift is all it takes to make a big difference. Often the first step is simply proving that something is possible. You don’t need the whole solution yet, just enough for people to see it working and get excited. That’s the part I love about the work we do.
